July Mom of the Month: Tammira

Tell us a little about yourself?

I was born and raised in West Baltimore, I come from a family where I’m 1 of 5 children. I always tell the story of where I’m from because I think it’s important as I feel I beat the odds. I’m a wife and mom of an 11 year old named Ryann, a business owner, realtor, and a business professor. I also own the Cube Cowork Space, which is the largest black woman owned coworking space in the United States.

What is the best part about being a mom?

The best part is that I get to include my child on my journey as an entrepreneur and building generational wealth she can be a part of. Having a mini me with me who I can fully trust is really cool. I can totally see her working in my business.

What do you find challenging about motherhood?

Making decisions is challenging as a mother. The decisions you make now will ultimately impact them as an adult. Whether it’s sports or deciding whether to put her in Japanese or Spanish. Even with running things past my husband, he still leaves things up to me.

What’s one thing you had to overcome with being a mother?

Guilt. I had to overcome guilt especially in the beginning of my career. I felt bad when I had to miss things with my child due to working. My daughter soon understood that the work I was putting in was going to allow her to have the things she wanted.

What’s something that’s important to you?

Education and exposure. I always wanted to make sure Ryan was well rounded and that she can handle herself in any situation no matter who she was around.
What effect has the pandemic had on you?

The pandemic hasn’t really had a negative effect on me, but I was able to focus on myself and my care. I had been looking for a therapist for a while, so when the pandemic started, I put both my daughter and I in therapy. The pandemic allowed my family to become even closer, we got to talk more and I got to spend more time with my husband.

What inspires you to be the best mom you can be?

My belief is that children don’t ask to be in this world. So what inspires me to be the best mom is her future. I want her to be great and she truly celebrates me and all my accomplishments. Because I know she’s watching me, I feel like I have to be great and be a good example to her.

What will you tell your children about how to be optimistic in today’s world?

I tell Ryann to live for today while you plan for the future. There are bad people in the world, but you have to give everyone and every opportunity a chance.

What are 3 things you can’t live without?

Cell phone, my husband, and my baby!

What would you do if you have 3 hours of no responsibilities?

I would binge Netflix and really chill.

What’s one thing you wish another mom would have told you about motherhood?

I wish someone told me more about decision making. Everyone talks about labor and delivery and breastfeeding but not about as much when the child is here and you have to make so many decisions.
